- In May 2015, M. Cherif Bassiouni, Emeritus Professor of Law at DePaul University in Chicago addressed the Fried-Gal Colloquium, chaired by Prof. Ruti Teitel. Prof. Bassiouni has served as member and chair of many U.N. and National Commissions of Inquiry into the conflicts of the former Yugoslavia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya and Bahrain. Often referred to as the "Father of International Criminal Law", he was co-chair of the Committee of Experts, drafting the U.N. Anti-Torture Convention. In 1999, he was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for his seminal work on the establishment of the ICC.
